Here in an interesting blog post over at the Strobist on why one should do some work for free and its benefits.

Plus, there are some great little bits of learnin' thrown in here and there.

Interesting blog spot.  Nice idea which I have read variations on since cameras were invented (about the time I was born)
When I gave professional photography, to earn some of my livelihood, a shot, I found out several things. (disclaimer: long time ago)
   (1)  Reduced prices on weddings means other angry pros in the area who are competitively priced. Their prices are high, but they are market-saavy. Reduced/ no fees people usually don't last unless they have other income.
   (2)  working part-time on a small newspaper, for a small salary, meant you shoot what is needed for the news and the ads.  No time for experimentation here.
    (3) Teaching several classes at a small college was the coolest.  Chance to experiment, spread the knowledge with young, energetic photographers, and get the best pay check out of the three.  Which still never matched my day job.
