Does anyone own one of Nikon's SB-24's that can tell me if it has an auto power off feature.  I have two older canons that do and I am trying to find a flash that does not have auto power off.  I use off camera flash with triggers and I hate having to run over to the flash and wake it up.

I have used the Vivitar 285's but I can't deal with the slow recharge cycle.

It has both, an ON (always on) and a STBY (standby) which will send the power to sleep mode after 80 seconds of no activity.

Ah, that's good to know. I have one, and I didn't know what standby did. I have left it ON before and found the batteries drained. Whoops!

Per the manual batteries would last 10 to 20 days in STBY mode - depending on battery type
