Guys - as many might have heard/read via news outlets, my town and others in the region were crippled by an ice storm. I'm hard to get a hold of for the time being. Sit tight.

Take care. I hope you have heat. Sometimes I'm glad our ice is the fluffy kind.

Good luck Craig I spent all last night directing FEMA trucks into a secured area the worst of it missed us by 4 miles and 1 degree. So they are setting up a FEMA staging area here and I got so lucky. I don't have much faith in FEMA but something may be better than nothing.

Be careful, Craig!!  This weather is crazy!

We came home from work today to find that we almost couldn't get into our back door, the roof of our back patio awning is so heavy with ice and snow you can barely open the door.

After the huge ice storm in Quebec in the 90's, I vowed to always have a working generator and some basic supplies handy.  There were some people after this storm that were without power for weeks in the brutal Quebec winter.  I still don't have a generator. ($$$)

There's lot of great info on various websites.  MRE's (military meals), bottled water, flashlights, batteries, candles, fire making equipment, generator etc.  The next house I buy will also have a wood burning stove.

There were even stories in Quebec of people having their generators and emergency supplies forcibly taken by others.  Best to conceal your plans and pack some "protection" if so inclined.  The generator can be a real red flag and some have even dreamed up ways to silence and conceal its operation.  Don't leave all your lights on at night, etc.

Mike when I lived in Montana I got a military surplus 30KW Gen for the total price of $500 and having it installed to my house with an auto turn on for power interruption cost another 500 that was having it moved from the Air Force base and a few friends.

When I sold the house it had increased the price by 5k and the wood burning stove I hooked into the central heating system with some cheap flex pipe it had a forced air blower on it... As for food well I was always a surviver so my kids knew the freezer was full and the MRRs were a favorite....

Water was no problem there if we had too Ice and snow would do..

Problem is most people rely on too many other people these days and to keep things down I had long cords that the generator could reach my closest neighbors and a few weapons.

As it is now when the storm started moving in the Kerosene heater and many bags of Ice in the chest freezer along with a month of canned goods would have worked but I did not need it this time.

I went 36 hrs without power as a result of the storm Mike Kovacs mentioned. Was preparing to leave for another state when the power came back on. I still haven't put a generator on my priority list, but we hosted my in-laws for 8 days in December as a result of the recent New England ice storm.

When I see these clowns lined up on TV waiting for the generators to arrive at the local Home Despot, I cringe.  If you haven't planned for a generator, the chances of properly installing it aren't too good. I doubt these people are in a position to wait for an electrician. "Phase? I thought that's what my daughter went through when she turned 13."

But I really should get one.

I have this thing about freezing in the dark. I don't like it.I have a backup generator and this house has a whole separate basic wiring setup to at least keep the furnace, a few lights and the fridges & freezer going. Oh, I can watch the TV and do the internet thingie, too. When the power is out, I've had people ask me "why do you have lights?", in a snotty way. I tell 'em "because I work for the power company, that's why". You should see the looks I get. People around here are waking up to the fact that cordless phones don't work when the power's out. I have a dial phone. I get asked the same kind of question about that, too. There are basic things anybody can do to keep safe without utilities and other modern conveniences. Just do everyone a favor. If you get a generator, please don't just plug your house into it. You need a transfer switch, or use extension cords direct to the load. If you hook the generator to the house wiring you can set a fire or worse yet, you could injure or kill a utility worker somewhere down the line. And no, turning off the breakers won't fix that. Stay safe...

Stay safe CE!

I'm was thinking of you when they said ice storms in AK!

Wood boiler.... in series with fuel oil, so will gravity heat the house as long as I don't overload it.
keep the pipes and me from freezing... even if I don't plan on burning wood that winter I've always got a little saved back,  course the chainsaw is there.  just more creasote (sp?) ...... Cat is very wimpy.... he has his own bunker behind the sink downstairs to go to whenever a van pulls up to the house (he doesn't like vans)  suspect he's secreted shotgun shells and canned goods there.  Have a small 22 that I may loan him to make him feel better,  though I think the accomplishment of dragging the 410 shells makes him happy.  I give him the used ones from squirrel hunting to keep him happy. He's a huge Ted Nugent fan and thinks Chuck Heston is still president.

Neighbor 2 doors down has generator... older couple.... I keep considering getting one for freezer.

Heavily armed rural area so no one's in danger of being accosted because they have a generator.  "An armed society is a polite society"

See Craig? It could be worse- it could be hurricaine season!

It's an adventure :thumbsup2:

Julio- I hope you and yours are all right!

Oh, and I wonder if you could keep a generator on the balcony of your apartment... right? At least, last I knew you lived in an apt.
