I need to remove a horizontal purple line from this photo:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3320/3317833504_e8216d4a1a_o.jpg

I have Photoshop Elements 6.

I would be greatly obliged if someone could walk me through the steps (or do it for me. :>)

Thanks.

step 1
rescan the photo, but reduce the brightness
(what scanning program are you using?)
you may find that the image will come back 'underexposed'...not a problem)
then use curves/brightness etc to lighten the image up.
but in the first instance rescan it and reduce the brightness. that will solve 90% of your problem

Thanks!

I mean, thanks, but there's a problem. I need to print a 10 x 12, more or less. So I'd like to have a larger corrected file or correct my digital file at this end. I scanned my own negative, and the purple line (actually lines, as there was another smaller one) somehow resulted from the scan. Unfortunately, I have misplaced the neg. The correction in the file that you linked does the job, but the file is too small.

So - is there any way that you could correct the image in a larger version, more suitable to a 10 by 12, and provide a link to it / or tell me roughly what I need to do in Photoshop elements - use the wand tool and then, etc. Just the basic steps. I should be able to muddle through highlighting the purple line(s) and then doing whatever is required to make the purple less noticeable in a print.

i simply used (in this case) the clone stamp tool.(although i use cs3)
enlarge the image ,so that the purple line is about 2-3mm in width.
the resize the clone tool to an appropriate size, ideally about twice the width of the purple line.
then place the tool on the purple line.
alt-click (to select) the area you wish to clone from immediately above or below the clonetool  boundary. in some areas you will have to adjust where you clone from
then simply clone the purple line out with smooth movements in one direction, using as few movements as possible.

I know it doesn't help you if you lost the neg but was it an Epson scanner?  If so, was the glass in the calibration area (slot cutout of film holder for it) clean?

It is an Epson scanner, a 3170. I try to keep the glass clean. But this, the main defect, is a straight, purple horizontal line.

my take on it is just being uploaded on flicker.

i have the same problem with my 3170, it's the outline of the light source.
if you look closely you will find a second purple line about 2/3 up the pitcure.

in the flicker set i have removed both of them.
as far as getting around the problem when scanning , i use vuescan.
initially i had these scan lines as well, but i got around it by reducing the brightness value. the scanned images where initially a little darker but that was an easy problem to fix. vuescan is good...just occasionally a little too good for it's own good

I had that problem with the old Epson infact there was a frosted plastic cover for it that solved that problem it went into the 3170 for MF but was dropped in the 4490 ...
