You can alse setup another language for the keyboard using control panel and switch between them.
The inconvenient is you will need somehow how to recall the keys position in the alternate keyboard distribution.

Hope it helps.

Hi Les,

Setup the keyboard for International English.

This let's you type ' then e to get é, or " then o to get ö for example.  When you just want ", you type " then

If you set this up for a second keyboard, Claudia can just switch the keyboard setting when she wants d'écrire en français

It doesn't cover all accented characters, but seems to handle most of the western european languages' accented characters.  For those that it doesn't handle, use the character map application.

Mille pardons! I tried most of the suggestions all you folks proposed to help Claudia make French accents using the keyboard of her first computer. I had some little success, but mostly failures. Claudia, who in her youth made her living by typing, only in the past few weeks finally decided she'd use a computer.

I made several clumsy attempts to show her how to add French accents to a computer generated text in her native French language. Fact is I wasn't adept at it and failed many times. She lost heart and was ready to return to her former mode of long distance communication with her sisters, nephew and niece i.e. writing long hand with a pen on paper and putting stamps on the envelope.

In desperation, I took Paul's suggestion and printed out Microsoft's protocol for adding accents, diacritical marks and symbols using the English International keyboard, and ........IT WORKED!!! Voila!

La mère et son garçon sont arrivés.

A thousand pardons for my extra long delay in responding to you kind NF members:

Justin, Philip, Pete, Nancy,. Mike, mitzli and Paul.-------Merci beaucoup!
