While i was scanning  the images i posted herehttp://nelsonfoto.com/SMF/index.php/topic,18995.0.html
the dreaded Scan line made a re- appearance.(extra bright area derived from cathode lightsource)

it's a problem that can be fixed in PS but it's time wasted (and really you should not have to do this sort of correction to a scan anyway...that's my opinion.)
I know a few others have been struggling with the same problem, and i had discovered some settings that would by and large eliminate the problem. But now i believe i have found the solution.
Hardware and Software set up: Epson 3170, Vuescan (Pro edition). and the solution proved to be quite simple.
remove the film carrier from the scanner, then in the scanner dropmenu go to

Scanner
 -Calibrate.

 that's it.
no more scan lines even at increased brightness( that was the problem for me so i used to scan a very low brightness and then tweak the settings in Picasa et al). if you change settings for whatever reasons just recalibrate, but so far i have not had any problems.
just my 2cents worth.
now this is only applicable to vuescan software- but this step may possibly work with other scanning software that has a calibrate function.

Now who would have thought that a piece of equipment would need to be calibrated every now and then. Thanks for the tip. That might explain why when I had the problem and unloaded then reloaded all the software my problem went away.
