i was wondering whether anyone could recommend a good way to store textual information with pictures?   as a history student, i often pluck images off the internet and keep them for future reference.  for example, there might be a postcard for sale on Ebay showing some interesting roadside motel or cafe in british columbia.  i can only make lowball bids for most items.  but sometimes people will put up a good quality image that i can drag onto my desktop.

however, how to add some descriptive information to this?  for example, photographer's name, dates, hyperlinks, etc.  usually just a few words is all i need, but occasionally a paragraph or two...  is there some way i can do this in iphoto, that i have just overlooked?

for example, here is an interesting pic that i would like to keep handy, along with a hyperlink and a few details:

What you are talking about is called "captioning". Photoshop can do it. When you open the file in Photoshop, look under "File" for "File Info" and select that. A dialogue box will pop up and you can enter an encyclopedia's worth of information if you like, and it will be appended to the image.

You can also use iPhoto to caption photos, either by enabling the info box in the lower left corner or by selecting the photo, then looking under "File" and then "Get Info". A dialogue box will pop up and you can type your description. iPhoto also allows you to pinpoint the location on a map, either manually or with GPS.

Photomechanic is a program I know PC owners use. I am not familiar with it personally, but I know it does allow for captioning and location.

The key phrase you want to search for, is IPTC, which apparently iPhoto only has limited/poor support for.

The standard IPTC tags include fields that you're interested in.

Irfanview (win only), which is free, lets you write the IPTC tags to the image file.

I do what Jake said in photoshop elements. It works very well and looks like this:
