I'm still pretty much computer unsavy after so many years of using them. I have a situation that hasn't occurred before and I can't figure out how to solve it. I can do work arounds, but I prefer the direct natural flow. I'm using PS 7, my OS is XP professional, and new laptop that has this problem is a Dell Latitude D610.
When I right click on a photo that I want to process in Photoshop and click on open Photoshop doesn't appear on the list of choices. It is installed and working fine on this, new for us, refurbed Dell laptop.
I have used PS7 with 4 different laptops and several MS OSs and never had this problem. Can anyone out there help me? Btw, my work-around is to start at PS then go to open under FILE then go to the folder where the digital image was tranferred from the camera or scanner. It works, but has many more steps, especially if I'm reviewing lots of folders looking for an older photo I want to work on.
Thanks in advance!
Les

ok right click on photo (that will open a drop menu) scroll down to ' Open With ' (another drop menu appears ) then scroll down to ' Choose Programm ' this opens a browse window. you then need to look for the PS7 file - default location is under C: drive - program files - adobewhatever. click on that file and find the adobe start up icon/... it may have a suffix like ps7.exe. then tick the ok button, that will bring you back to a the browse window, and there is a box marked 'always use this application' put a tick in there and hit 'ok'
from now on you should always then be able to click on an image file and it will always open in ps7

Les, did you click the "Browse" button under the list of programs? That should bring up an Explorer window so that you can located the executable file.
Another work-around is to open PS, then open folder where your image is located. Make sure that the folder window is not maximized, then just drag the photo file to the Photoshop canvas (I do this a lot when browsing thumnails).

Justin,
Thanks for tips. The second suggestion is a better workaround than what I've been doing. Dragging photo to PS screen, while surfing thumbnails, looks like a good solution.
As to your first suggestion, the problem is Browse doesn't come up as an option when I go through drop menus after right-clicking on target photo I want to work on PS.
On my old desk top, that had the dreaded ME 2000, PhotoShop came up on intial drop menu when I right-clicked on photo and clicked Open with. It was listed there, just clicking on it, and without any further steps, the chosen photo would come up on PS screen. It worked the same way for the 3 previous laptops that were upgraded to XP, 2 with XP Home and one also with XP Professional version.
Thanks again Justin.

Any chance your PS7 is not installed in the C: Program Files folder, Les? If not, itmaycause a problem like you are describing.
With your PS 7 open, click on help, system info. You should see a multi-line screen that includes one much like this: Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 6.0\
(yours should say "photoshop 7 or something close to it, as I have Elements).

Tom,
Thanks for responding and information. I checked the path you mentioned and the PS 7.0 is listed as you suggested:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0\but I also see below it a few lines:
Photoshop scratch has async I\O disabled
Should it be enabled? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything is working A-OK with PS& itself, it's only the annoyance that I can't just right click on a photo and see and click on Photoshop as one of the choices to click on-- which would automatically open the full image unto blank PS screen.
Justin's suggestion of dragging thumbnail of target photo to PS screen is what I'm doing now. When both screens are minimized in size, it's a simple action. I can live with this method.
I can go back to the warehouse where I bought the refurb Dell laptop and asked a tehnician if he can help me get directly to PS screen. It's not part of guarantee, as it's an added application. but maybe out of goodwill, PCExchange may do it, as this is the first laptop I bought from them.
Thanks for your help, Tom.

Les,
When you select "Open with ...", it should give you a list of programs. At the bottom, there should be the option "Choose Program."
That should pop up a box that should have the option button "Browse ..."
Then you have to go into the PS7 folder and find the Photoshop program. Make sure you put a check mark into the box "Always use the selected program to open this type of file."
It should be just above the "Browse ..." button.

Mike, Thanks for you response and suggestion.
Yesterday, I finally got to the point when I right-click on my target photo and highlight " open with," I now have Photoshop 7.0 on the list. But even though the next screen is, indeed, PS 7, but there is no image on it. And if I click on "Open" under FILE, it doesn't open to the folder the photo I clicked on.
Maybe I need to uninstall PS7.0 then reinstall it and hopefully the correct path will be there to eliminate the "bug" that won't allow my chosen photo to open directly in PS7.
It's worth a try.
