Today, after being a bit confused about the quality I was seeing in files out of my brand new 5D, I went back to the place I bought it, Fotocare on 22nd St. between 5th and 6th Ave. This shop is a pro place, and someone is always there buying a complete Hasselblad digital kit or some other mega bucks thing. But every time I've gone in there, they have been nice, talked to me until I no longer had any questions, and showed me plenty of equipment when I asked. No pressure, no rush, no feeling that I was wasting their time even when I probably was.

So when I went in this morning, they took the camera, tried it with a couple lenses, tried my lens on a couple bodies, looked at the files on the computer, looked at files I had brought in to show them, then decided that it was not the lens as I had thought, but the sensor in the body that was out of alignment. So they went in the back, got a brand new camera out of the box, switched the serial numbers on my receipt, and gave the new camera to me and sent the original camera back to Canon.

No muss no fuss. This doesn't work right. Here is one that does. See you later.

I'll definitely be back. And if you come to NYC (or if you live here) I'd definitely recommend stopping by. They sell new stuff, used stuff and lots of digital printing stuff. Prices are typically the same as B&H for big ticket things, while accessories are sometimes a bit higher. But the customer service is great.

I don't think you wasted their time because you made the purchase there when you were ready. So the time they spent with you was well worth it to them in my opinion. Then again what the hell do I know Smiley. Is the the MKII you got? I must have missed the post I am sure you made when you got it but I have been out of town for a few weeks....Griz

Yep. MkII. I really like it. I also got a Canon 270EX flash which is super convenient and works really well. Plus it wasn't $450.

I started this process about 2 or so years ago, so they were pretty patient. But part of it was that when I was ready to buy the camera about a year ago, there were all these rumors about a refresh of the model. So I waited. And then my camera money went to a pair of very large, very nice photographs for our living room. So I waited some more. Meanwhile, I'd stop in a chat, buy some film, some paper, look at the used stuff. But you are right - they have the sort of long-view I tried to encourage in my sales staff when I managed a bike store. They got me eventually. Unfortunately nearly no one in retail has that view any more, including the people whose bike store I used to manage.

Anyway, the long and the short of it is: great service. I'll go back.

Cool, did you consider the 7D as well or were you FF all the way. How do you like the flash? I am considering that flash for my G9 and would like it to be usable on my 5D as well.

Just the 5D. I am very pleasantly surprised by the flash. It has quite a bit of power for such a small flash. And if your camera supports in-camera settings, then you can control a whole range of settings. There is one setting - high shutter speed I think it is called - that makes day time fill flash seem pretty trivial to do. Very cool. I also used it as the triggering flash for my Nikon SB-24 and it worked very well doing that. They & the camera all worked out the balance very well with me having to do very little adjustment to make everything come out right. It might be perfect for what you describe - the G-series and the 5D.

Good to hear that you got such good service and hopefully the replacement body is AOK. You've gotten some great shots already from the 17-40 lens (I especially liked the "bridge" and "grasses" pics from Central Park), so having a non-wonky body will complete the package as it was meant to be. Your first camera must have been assembled by the evil Canon robot who goes down to the pub at lunchtime...

Yes, the 17-40L lens is a great one. I rent it when I need a shortie.

He got fired. Now he works at Toyota installing accelerator pedals.

So far so good. I shot a charity event where a friend was riding a spinning bike for 4 hours to raise money for Sloan-Kettering's cancer research, and all the photos looked very good. Amazing really how badly I could do on exposure and still pull something out of the RAW file. But everything looked sharp. I'll take it with me to Arizona next week where I have another book reading to do. Get some nice desert landscape photos.

I'll clarify my original comment on the 270EX flash. It is a great flash for shooting poppy flash shots well-balanced flash shots, but for an event in a big place with lots of surfaces and people and such like I just did, a big speedlight is the schizzle.

Oh right - that was part of some other conversation where someone said I was the camera pimp. I am currently no longer in character. :p
