A website used one of my pics in an article

One of the pictures I took of my niece the first time she came to visit from Germany got used in an article at AltDaily.

I'm kinda conflicted about this.  It's great someone thought enough of the picture to use it, but they didn't ask for permission!  I did get a photo credit & a link to the picture at the bottom of the page, so I guess I won't complain about it.

I think you should complain.  At the very least they should have asked for permission.

Don't complain.  Explain your rights, and where they were violated.  Explain that there're financial ramifications to their theft, credited or no.  Separate yourself from the flattery.

I don't like the word "complain" as it's used here - too close to victimization.  You're the one in the right.  Assert that.

Keep in mind that they didn't use your picture simply because they "liked" it. They used it because they get income from advertisers and they thought your picture would draw in more readers to sell to advertisers. Thus they are directly making money from your picture.
Point that simple business fact out to them; of course they already know that.

An Irish newspaper used one of my Flickr pictures without asking. I caught them, contacted them, and dealt directly with the editor's office. I was offered (and accepted) their standard fee for photos of 100 Euros.

Scott's right -- "complain" would sound as if your feelings are hurt, so definitely go in there with righteous confidence.  Philip's advice is sound as well.  The fact that he got money might mean that you might, as well, Nathan...but it might also mean that they'd drop yours and "borrow" someone else's.
