I am negotiating a trade of my Canonet QL 17 for a digicam upgrade from my Oly C4000Z, here in the appropriate NF forum.
One of the cameras being considered is a Samsung Digimax V6, which has a USB 1.1 connectivity. I was informed that it is compatible with the USB 2 of my Dell laptop, but it will slow down transfer of files significantly. Another wrinkle is the USB cable with non-standard camera jack is not available from the other trader.
Will the following work-around correct the compatibility problem: if I take the memory card out of the Digimax V6, after a photo shoot, and put it into Claudia's Canon A720 IS and hook it up with a USB 2 cable to my Dell Latitude? Will this correct the difference in connectivity between V6’s USB 1.1 and Canon’s USB 2 by avoiding a direct connection of the V6 to my laptop by using the surrogate camera as a by-pass?
I’m on shaking ground as I’m a computer un-savy guy and may be talking through my hat. Aside from lacking IS capability, the Digimax V6 has all the features I need and a boost of 2 MP to boot. It's size is more ergonomically compatible with my extra long fingers and palms. The newer model compact digicams continually shrink in size, which make working controls very difficult if not impossible.
As always, I seek your technical knowledge, suggestions and/or advice.
Thanks in advance,
Les Gediman

Yes, that will work. and you will get the speed you usualy gets from the Canon A720. As long as the card itself is up for the speed, and even if it isnt, it will go faster than usb 1.1, thats is for sure. But I will suggest you buy a card-reader. You can get them for about 5 bucks included free-shipping. =) Here is one card-reader, that takes about every diffrent cards out there, for only 2.89$ included shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-All-1-CF-SD-XD-MMC-Memory-Card-Reader-9936-/270607417364?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item3f01758014Using a card-reader you can have the reader connected all the time, or only when you can. And you can just plug the card in, just push it into the reader, and the computer will automatically discover it, and use the standard import program, if you use elements, lightroom, bridge or just windows operative-system or something completly different. It will probably act just as the Canon A720 when you connects it, and will probaby go faster than doing it via the camera, since it doesnt have to go trough the camera =)

I second the card reader. If you're going to have to take the card out of the camera anyway, this makes the most sense.

Thanks so much Taulen for your detailed explanation and the good news that it will also work with a card reader. The Digimax V6 takes an SD card. I used to have a card reader for an SD configuration, but but can only find a PNY compact flash reader. However $2.89 on eBay for a universal card reader with free shipping from Hong Kong. Wow!
But by what method do they send it? Me thinks it's by junk? With a headwind all the way it may take many moons to reach the port of Boston.
That gives a green light to the V6 for a shakedown cruise trial run.
Captain Slack,
Thanks for your seconding Taulen's comments on card reader.
Problem solved! Off to bed!

My experience is that it will probably take 10 to 14 days, so not fast, but for the price, I feel thats it somewhat worth it

On the travel times, FWIW:
A filter from Hong Kong to Montevideo: 24 calendar days. Film from Shanghai about 3 weeks. I can claim that it is as far as it gets. Travel time should be a lot faster to the US.
I believe that time depends not so much on distance, but rather on issues such as if there are direct mail flights or if it goes through distribution / sorting centers.

The Card reader came today from time of order to today. 15 days I remember in days past a letter took longer than that from NY to CA. and it was ordered on a weekend.... Fast enough for me.

Larry,
That's pretty quick. I didn't have to go that route, because Dan Iggers included a card reader with the Lumix LS75 and it works wonderfully well. .

Longest things seem to take is from Europe as they have to pass through VAT land I figure... 48 days for a bulk roll of film from Germany. Ebay refunded my money it showed up 3 days after the 45. I figured it was a great deal as I contacted eBay and they told me keep it... just leave a neutral feedback....

I would be looking for a better card reader on Craigslist to have in the wings. Those asian cheapies sometimes work and sometimes they don't.Even the USB cable that ships with them is junk.I have two identical jobbies that are not reliable enough to carry with me away from home. There are several brands around with names that you have heard before that will do the job and can be had for 10 bucks or less if you wait your turn.Ron G
