Image comparison

As I've complained about oversharpening in my Walgreen scans, I 've also been wondering about something else. Without going into detail yet, would you tell me which image version looks better to you?
1)
2)
There's a distinct difference to my eyes but is it real?
Thanks,
William

#1 has less blown highlights but still blown and the shadows should be deeper in both....

#2 is clearly better. #1 looks so oversharp as to be brittle. #2 can probably be made better with some PS adjustments. My "drug store" scans never come back without needing some tweaking.

This is why I never get the Drug Store CD these days.... I get them developed only and that is iffy.

If you have other scanning options. The CD at time of processing is so cheap that I find it makes sense to get even if scans are not the best. Only rarely do I want to scan all 36 frames myself to have for a reference file.

Well I think that I need no reference as I do what I want with what I have and that is all I need is my best not anthers shitty scans that just end up in the land fill. I understand that they is a future layer of the earth called the AOL period it has old floppies and Cd's.
Maybe the stuff you get is worth saving at the time I take my time most of the time and that is not a rap song.

Cost. I can't afford a scanner ($150 - 200) so I try to maximize what I can get out of the store as the other option for the forseeable future is nothing. Unless you know somewhere I can put a scanner on layaway and make $20 payments when I get that much to spare? Because it really is that tight here.
What I've also found, is that the compression used by the iPhoto upload & Picassa web pages is causing a chunk of artifacts as well that contribute to the oversharpened appearance. The images are the same file on my computer but uploaded with different parameters. This alone is good to know as it's something that will still be an issue when I can actually afford a decent scanner.

Will
If you can afford shipping I have an Epson scanner for that price it has the 35mm holder as the original 120 got destroyed. it is a 3170. And the software is still down loadable from Epson.
