I discovered today, when I popped in to make a quick post, that when I came back an hour or so later, all messages that had shown as new when I was here (the majority of forums) were no longer listed.

This is one of my pet peeves with APUG -- if I get interrupted or can't read the whole system at a sitting, I lose the indicator of what's new since my last post.  By contrast, f295 keeps new postings as new, individually, while photo.net uses standard HTML links and my browser will tell me whether I've visited a link (which is a thread or forum) in the last X days.  Yeah, I know, different software, but it makes a huge difference in the way one can use the forum, especially the experience if one gets interrupted or wants to drop a single quick message into the mix.

At APUG, seemingly, it's not changeable -- the time-out is configurable, but the ability to keep new posts new after leaving and coming back isn't an option.  Is it possible to do things that way here?  If it takes cookies, that's fine -- I have them on anyway.

I don't think it is possible with this code, but I will mine for an answer as I have time. In hindsight, there are a few issues I woulda liked to address at implementation, but they didn't occur to me then. I like the BBS that RFf uses, allowing uploading images, but it, too, loses track of what you've actually perused verse what was new at last log-in or view.

Lemme dig down.
