B&W Chromes and drum scans - what's the point?

Okay, William's posting of affordable orthochromatic film, and Freestyle's reference to B&W chromes using said film, have got me to wondering: What's really the point of processing B&W chromes? Back in the day, I'd shoot transparencies for color separation and publication. But with B&W, whatcha gonna do with the resulting slide? Project it? Scott Eaton over at P-net has always said that if you want prints, shoot print film. Which begs the question with the whole B&W slides issue...
Then, I see on LFf that someone's offering 4x5 drum scans for $25 a pop. Short of a 10' wide mural, what the heck's the point of
that
?! I've gotten great large (11x17 or so) images from my 8.2 megapixel 20D. What's the need for terabytes of info from a drum scan?
Just pondering.

What I have seen done, beautifully, was a small "light table" mounted on a wall (like for xrays) and the fellow changed the slide daily.
If you have a sun lit window, I'd bet it would look beautiful that way too.
But really, the only legitimate reason for chromes is projection. And there really aren't many good opportunities for that.
Perhaps with a 4x5 or 5x7, one could frame a chrome with out a mat and tell people it's a mobile?

could you make a modern "Daguerreotype"? Take the slide and back it with silver plate?

Take an old Simmons 45 and turn it on it's side to make a projector out of it.

The tones, grain and gray tones of B&W chromes are different from a Negative and they can be used for a special mood or feeling. Even scanned they create a different feeling. It may be one you just can't put you finger on but the brain keeps telling you that something is different.
My 2 cents worth here.
