Has anyone done it well?  What equipment and technique did you use? I'm wondering if purchasing a DSLR and light table might be the way to go, instead.

I'm pretty sure that the Epson V700 can do up to 8 X 10 Tom. I've done some smaller glass negatives using mine with good results:

I use either my Umax Powerlook III or an Epson Expression 1600, both with transparency adapters. either works well, in my experience.

Well the V700 is the answer. The DSLR will crop the 8x10.
