I'm posting a challenge for you. Here's an image and you have no information other than what is in front of you. I want to know the name of the photographer. I already know when, where and why it was taken, and you're allowed to share that information here, or any other tips or leads, once you find it. So what tricks would you use to dig out the author? Would a challenge like this reveal the strengths or the inadequacies of Google, Bing and Wiki? For once I'd be inclined to put my money on the tortoise rather than the hare. http://dejenjugarelmoreno10.blogspot.com/2008/11/la-tragedia-de-armero-fue-anunciada-por.htmlThere is a small prize for the first forum member to come up with the (verifiable) name of the photographer.

A challenge like this is definitely revealing the inadequacies of Google. There's 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back!

Frank Fournier http://www.funonthenet.in/forums/index.php?topic=145792.0Ongoing Edited Notes : Omayra Sanchez could be a mature 12 years old girl and could possibly be the same person as the woman in Frank Fournier's prize winning photo shown in my above link, and also in the photo seen of the rescued woman being led out of the mud by two men in your contest link published by Harold Vargas. Then again, if Harold Vargas, aka "electroharold," published it , maybe he's the photographer Or was it you, Sandeha, who has lived in so many parts of the world? Where were you in Nov 1985?

See, I thought it was Fournier, too, but there were no indications of that in google images. I even googled "woman pulled from mud in Armero", and the only match I got led me right back to that original blog that Sandeha posted.

Les, definitely not the same subject as Fournier's famous shot of Omayra Sanchez, who did not survive. Fournier shot his series, AFAIK, entirely in colour. And it ain't Harold neither - he's a young guy. Me? I was in Cambridge, UK, just started my degree in '85, when I saw the image in a Sunday paper. I'll post something about the relevance of this at the beginning of next month. Yous'll hafta wait. ;-) Carol Guzy was also there with Michel duCille, all outsiders flown in afterwards, and all colour shooters for their agencies. My suspicion is that it may have been a local photographer who was there early. Keep trying.

Published in black and white, granted, but I've seen the same image in a colour version, which I assume would be the original.

Felipe Caicedo?? From the page: http://www.qhuboibague.com/blog/2009/11/13/armero-no-ha-muerto-vive-y-palpita.htmlA Babelfish translation of the text immediately below the above photo reads in part: Felipe Caicedo, who worked for Colprensa in the year of 1985, filled of bravery to register the tragedy. “I took very many photographies and one of those went to one a very pretty woman who left the scrubs covered with mud and was half-naked”, she said.
“By that photo I received a recognition work and a mention of honor of World Press Photo. They began to say that I had exploded to that girl, I did if it were so that people knew the occurred thing in that site”, exclaimed Caicedo.
“Hopefully never one becomes to present/display a natural disaster like this. Most terrible after this avalanche it was the human drama. Unfortunately the tragedy is the news and the journalists want or no, they must and they must be present there to cover it, that is its work and profession. ”, it concluded, Felipe, photographer of the Time.I did a bunch of Google web searching and then decided to just try an image search (on my slow dialup). +fango +fotógrafo armero 1985 -omayra Netted the above image as the second hit. That is very sad about the little 13 year old (Omayra). I would hope that they tried to get her free. Bill

And the search was successful only because that page spelled the little girl's name differently.

Billy Bob,
Guess the tortoise speed dial-up hit pay dirt. I did see the two different spellings, but didn't pursue that lead. Was that a hint or coincidence that Sandeha mentioned his best guess was a slow approach would be better?
Congrats! You nailed it.
Les

I took a chance by trying to exclude her name form the search; I risked losing useful results as she was a big part of the whole story, so any page that referenced Sandeha's photo likely referenced her too. I wanted to see how many pages did not reference Omayra. If that page had spelled her name the same as all the others it wouldn't have been included in my hit list. Her name - and Frank Fournier's - was causing a lot of noise in the search. So - it was luck. Bill

Congratulations, Bill! Wow, I never would have found it under those circumstances. Part of the problem was, I've never seen this image before. Twenty-five years ago I was living in California (Navy, stationed in Alameda) a newlywed, and soon-to-be father. I didn't have much time for world news.
