This year I decided to recreate my original camera outfit based around a Sears TLS (Ricoh Singlex). In got lucky with the condition of the lenses I purchased, with the exception of the 90-230mm zoom. The first two I received had fogging/fungus issues, so I kept at it till I got one that was good.
I decided that instead of letting them lay around gathering dust, I would tear one down to see if I could clean it up, and to try out my new spanner tool. After disassembly, it was determined that the first element in the rear group was the culprit, and I removed it for cleaning.
It looked like the pictures you see of petri dish cultures, all streaked in one direction. Lens cleaner wouldn't remove it. I had read somewhere that Ponds Cold Cream was good for removing fungus, but I don't have any, or know if it is even for sale anymore, so I went with Vaseline hand cream. Didn't even cut it. So I reassembled the lens for the practice, and gave up on the thought of doing the second one.
What gets me, is it's the same element in both lenses that is affected. None of the other elements have this problem, or were even dirty. It seems the element is made of some different type glass than the others, and this may make it susceptable to the fungus. My only hope is that the other two don't have the same future.
What I'm wondering is if any of you have had any experience like this, or know of a source for lens elements?

You will never find an element for one of those without buying the whole enchilada. You should be able to pick up another one on the auction site for 5 or 10 bucks. Or, you could pop for the really nice Dietz 80/200 with macro I have and don't need or want. Ten plus the ride.

It took me three trys just to get a good one, then I went after a fourth just to make sure , and it was a newer style with out the tripod mount. But that Dietz sounds good. I'll send you a PM.

Just as an update, I have been checking around the various forums, and it would appear that a 50-50 mix of Hydrogen Peroxide and Ammonia works wonders on removing lens fungus. Some say you need to soak the element for a few hours to get it all off. Of course, you may still be stuck with the etching of the surface that can occur, but at least it's worth a try. I hate the idea of throwing a good lens away, so if this doesn't work, they will just be put in the parts bin.
