Has anyone here tackled a CLA on one of these? The usual hardened grease thing. I haven't found any diagrams or info on the net. Gerry

I did one a couple of years ago. Mine would move with insane amounts of force needed. The shutter was in good shape & I didn't want to deal with colimnating the lens, so I wanted to avoid disassembly.
What I did was put it on infinity and begin wiping down the exposed part of the helical from the rear. Then rotate back and forth wiping old grease off and putting on more lighter fluid. Eventually, grease stops coming off and the helical moves freely. I then relubed it with lithium grease from an autoshop the same way - wiping a small amount on the dry helical and working it forward into the mount. Much faster and easier than degreasing was.
The effort was well worth it - a good Agfa Karat is one of the best of the early 50's pocket rockets, I think.

Gerry did you try the hair dryer thing first. You warm it gently and get it moving but not too much heat. sometimes that works and the old lube reanimates without running all over the place and while you move it it softens up and stays that way.

I agree with William on this one. There's stuff in the front of that thing you really don't want to mess with. If you can get some of the old gunk out of there and get a couple of drops of light oil worked into it, it will make cleaning and re-lubing much easier. As an aside, i have an Agfa Standard that had the horrible green goo and it was next to impossible to focus. To clean it out would have been a lot of work, the way it's put together. I was able to work a couple of drops of 3n1 oil into the glop and it now works fine. It's been ten years and still going.

Thanks for the input. I have done the hair dryer and lightly applying & gun oil to the focusing threads. The main problem seems to lie in the film advance/shutter cocking linkage. I have disassembled and cleaned Isolettes in the past, but the front shutter assembly is more complex on this. I think the whole front needs to come off but I am hesitant to do that. Then again, there is not a lot to lose. At least I will have a container of spare parts.

Good luck! The advance on mine was fine so that was good for me. The front of these are quite ... fiendish is the word that springs to mind. Not straightforward at all. If you do go that route, have a digital handy to document how it comes apart - that may make it possible to get it back together

Maybe a better plan would be to send it to Jerry Sorin, Eddy Smolov's back up guy. BTW, it is being said (on RFF) that Eddy is sick and no longer taking repair work.

I hate to say this, in a way, but a little monster camera like that Karat would tell you a hell of a lot about how good he really is...

And what is the price of another compared to replacement? Maybe Dean has a better idea.

Good luck with your repairs! I have an Ansco Karomat that is the American clone of the Karat (note the insertion of "OM" into the name....very Zen), and my only problem was the leaky bellows, thank goodness. If the focusing and/or shutter started going bad, it would soon become a paperweight, since I have no repair skills. BTW, Gerry, how are the bellows on your Karat? I "fixed" mine with a modified Bel-Jac and it now no longer leaks light.

Pete; The bellows are light tight. Whew! I did see your invention. Should be a money/time saver. Of course, until all else is fixed, the bellows are a non counter. I thought that I read a post (or two) on NFF about someone tearing into one of these and doing a lens swap between two bodies. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Gerry, I seem to recall Scott swapping a Solinar between a couple of cameras and dealing with the grease. If I remember correctly, it was around this time a year ago.

Lately, I've been using lighter fluid and a small blow torch on the Agfa helical.
It works. You have to be a little bit careful with the blow torch.

OK Mike, you're starting to scare me . I hope that isn't part of a cure for an Ikonta :p. Gerry
