Twenty years ago, I saw the beginning of the end for commercial darkrooms.  I used to frequent an outfit that hired college students to do the print work, and one of their employees was a master.  Just a couple of remarks about what I was looking for in a print, and he would turn out a piece that would knock your socks off.  Alas, when he graduated, he went into the IT industry, and a few months after that the business folded.  Not because he left, but due to lack of business.  After that, I had to rent space and equipment, and do my own stuff.  It was fun, but the pressure of getting a decent print within the time constraints was tiring.
