That's a troubling situation but generally speaking, nothing new.  Photos have been doctored up since time immemorial.  "Photography" is from the Greek, meaning "writing with light", and even digital cameras need light to make a picture.  Be happy we don't use the term "heliograph" (sun-writing) anymore.

There has been software out for years that will do basically the same thing.  Panasonic just figured out a way to put it in-camera, without breaking the price point.  Whether it is a big seller, who knows.  Like the article said, the market is saturated, and with one company having 20 models for sale at the same time that are only incrementaly better than the last one, the rest of the camera features better be top notch or not many will buy it.

I am pretty sure that the P&S digital will be dead in a few years.
