Connor and I ticked another thing off our Bucket list. See Coober Pedy.
and seeing we had an extra long long weekend (5 days) we set of into the sunset.
and after driving 10 hours and 860 Kilometres(and never leaving the state) in a more or less straight Line we arrived.Stayed in a Dugout , noodled for some opal, and had some Massive Hamburgers.......all in all a pretty good few father and son days.

Martolod,

Those are impressive shots, especially the killer sunset.  I love open road shots such as the first.  That shot could have been taken somewhere in the Dakotas as far as the scenery goes.

I see that Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world.  What are one's chances of finding an opal?  About like finding a gold nugget in California these days, I suspect?

Looking forward to Part II.

Is that a smelter on the horizon in the first shot Kallie?  Lot of smoke for being out in the middle of nowhere.  Good to see you stopped the car to take that one.  Want to see some picks of you digging for opals.

No Smelter, it's actually looking towards Port Augusta, and the smoke is from a coal fired power station ( 3 Power stations , actually). there is a Lead smelter about an hour's drive down the road but i did not cover it on this trip.

Depends on where you go. some mullock heaps are very clean having been picked over ,the best chances are if you pick over a recent/active claim. Usually the owners don't mind you digging in their mullock heaps, as long as you ask for permission, as a due courtesy. most miners after all started off 'noodling' for opal before they pegged a claim and dug out a mine.
We spent a few hours sifting through several heaps and found a few bits , but i did find some great specimens of Gypsum, bot in column and Rose Form.
Yes ,Dennis, the Sky and the colours are something else...and the quality of the light is amazing.
Part 2 is pending...

Beautiful shots! I am glad that you had a good trip. But you were driving in the wrong side of the road!

wide brown land- me @r$e-

everything is GREEN......there been a hell of a lot of water up there in recent weeks.the whole countryside was green. normally the area around the Breakaways, the oodnadatta track, and coober pedy is just red desert. but tere is grass, wildflowers and bushes everywhere

I'm not sure I've ever seen a road so straight Wink  Or flat.

Nice sunset.
