I like the crop.  The discontinuity in the candle arrangement in the lower left of the original is distracting - it doesn't aid in leading the eye.  It makes sense to do all the cropping from that corner, as you've done (not cropping out any of the lady).

Try again.

Agree with BillyBob. The lady and what she is doing now becomes the subject of the picture.

I suppose it depends on what type of feeling you are trying to convey with the image.  The first one looks more like a distant, respectful observation, while the crop looks more like an intrusion.  But that said, I do like the crop better, and would most likely not consider it an intrusion if not having seen the original.

I agree, the crop is much better, those candles on the left are very distracting.  I also like how her face is now closer, and you can see the expression on her face.  Nice shot!

Crop version is better, plus, it'll print easier on a 8x10 paper.

Yep I prefer the crop for reasons listed above.

How about a square crop?  See how that looks.  I like the rectangular crop but there's a feeling that a square one would tighten things up more and make it more intimate.

My tuppence, for what it's worth.  Smiley

Titrisol,

I've taken the liberty to crop your wonderful photo another way. I removed the small island of candles on the bottom left.  I think it is stronger to show the full corner of the left bank of candles.

What do you think?

I'm with Les' idea - those candles in the left down corner are distracting.

Your crop is also a good one, both work for me.

I think Les's idea is great, I hope I can do it real darkroom

I'll try to prtin this in 11x14 paper and see what comes out.
I expect boulder-grain + nice contrast
