I bought a 1937 Zeiss Tessar 5cm 2.8 for Contax a few weeks ago.It may need some internal cleaning, but it does fine overall. I used it this morning on an Olympus EP-2 hand held. I used ISO 100 with "natural" mode, and the lens was set at 2.8.

Don't see any lens faults here, Raid.  Outdoors in direct sunlight, now that may show something.

Raid - Great performer for a lens a year older than I am .  What adapter do you use?

I agree with you; the lens will flare in direct sunlight.

Hi James,
I use a Fotodiox adapter. It came to me with the EP-2 and a 17mm lens as a set.

Raid,

Another fine portrait of your daughter, Dana. It is done in your signature style  informal and elegant, with an extra ingredient: lots of love.

Hope we can get together this winter in Florida. Best to the whole family.

I've owned one of these for some time and found it to be very sharp. Once you clean the lens elements, I think you'll find it's an excellent lens.

I have several of these -- in Contax RF mount, the Nettax 35mm rangefinder and an f/3.5 version for a VP127 Kodak/Nagel Vollenda and Baby Ikonta. It's sort of odd that the lenses for the Vollenda and Baby Ikonta perform slightly differently than those for the Contax RF and Nettax, despite also being 5cm focal length. I guess the one-stop aperture difference does make a ... difference.

I wish I had your skills in cleaning lenses. I may send the lens for cleaning one day, but it is doing fine now.

Nice shot. For an uncoated prewar lens used wide open this is excellent, but that's Zeiss for you - they never fail to exceed expectations. The Sonnar Collapsible 5cm F2 delivers similar natural light results used wide-open in natural indoor light. These lenses are indeed quite flare prone, so keep the Sun behind you if working outside if you can.

Thanks, Dave. I always avoid direct sun unless I actually want the effects to be visible. It is nice looking when done at window light. Then the effect is more controlled.
