I shot at f/4 and 5.6 (fully open) at 1:2 macro so DOF was very short
No background; just the light drops over the dark wall in the background

Very nice indeed.  Did you use anything for the background, like some black paper, or did you just use a really short dof?

I like them both for different reasons.  The b&w version has a jewel like look to it, while the color one adds depth to the view.
