Dan, thanks for the comments and the Australian interpretation of an ancient instrument - amazing how different cultures have different interpretations of what were once, I guess, everyday objects, and how brand names became the generic identifier or noun - Stove for cooker, Hoover for vacuum cleaner, Chesterfield for sofa.

Billybob - Stan Rogers had it right - that's a pretty accurate description of the Morris Dancers - thanks for posting it here.  I must clarify that the "hitting with sticks" is really symbo;ic, and not carried out with any force.  They hit each other's sticks together to make a knocking rythmic sound.
