Ricoh Rambling 'Round

Before I got the first roll of B&W back from the lab, I went ahead and loaded up a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 for some color shots.  Just different places around the county and town.  Most of them had no corrections done to them, just cropping.  But as I look at them on Flickr, I see where a bit of contrast could have helped a few.  Here are some samples from the shoot over two days.

That Ricoh of yours rocks! That's one handsome series of photos. Bravo! 

The only Ricoh I had was a top of the line P&S. I bought at a local Ritz when it was on sale. Can't remember the model, but it served me well. I recall its demise happened here in St Augustine many years ago. I was taking photos of our aquarobics class from the concrete border of the pool. I tripped and was heading into the water with the camera in my hand. My former quick reaction went into play and I called to a friend, John, who was sunning on a chaise lounge. The Ricoh was heading toward John as I fell into the pool with my clothes on. John, who is close to my age and still very athletic, sprung from his chair and almost caught the camera, but it fell on the concrete before he could break its fall. My fear was the Ricoh would end up in the water, which never happened, but it got quite badly dented and the viewfinder smashed in. Think I still have it at home.

Thank you so much, Les.  I'm glad I was able to get it back in working order. 

Depending on which model Ricoh you are talking about, even as a parts camera yours could be worth some money.  There is a large following that shoots mainly the last Ricoh film p&s's, somewhat cultishly.  I myself prefer the older rangefinders.  I've got a Five-One-Nine that I tried to rehabilitate, but it is sticking again, so it's either buy the special tools to be able to open it up the rest of the way, or send it off for repair.

Phil,

I am a big fan of Ricohs.  I have a very old Ricoh 35 rangefinder (I know there were multiple models).  Mine is built like a fixed-lens version of an old Leica, but has an integrated finder/focusing finder.  It is a lovely old beast.

I like Mr. Blue Sky a lot .

Phil - These are beautiful in color and composition.  "Skyliner" is almost mystical - the grand clouds and the understated plane.  Well done.

Reed, Ricoh never could give up on a model name.  I gave some advice to a fellow over on RFf about a 35S that he had, for adjusting the rangefinder vertical, and he comes back with it was in a different place.  He also posted a photo of the model he had, and it was about ten years newer than the one I was thinking about, so I always will have to be careful to make sure what version someone is talking about on the Ricohs.

James, being close to an airport gives me plenty of chances to get a good airplane photo.  Due to the prevailing winds, they usually only launch in two directions, so certain parts of town are better to be in for such a shot.  And I like shooting on the day after a weather front goes through.

Thanks, Graham.  I even had a set of the auxilary lenses for the 519, but sold them when I figured I'd never locate the matching finder for a reasonable amount.
