I don't know what brings me to the small fishing boats, in this case in Piriapolis harbor. The little Pen D3 got some exercise after more than a year of shelf. I am learning that you can use half-frame with the Epson V600 and get usable images, but it takes patience. I'm evaluating some of these for a dyptic, what do you think?

It was very warm in the dock, fortunately there was some breeze - and nice colors. Very strong light, hard to avoid strong contrast.

Film was Kodak Gold 100 (hope they can still produce it), developed in a minilab. I did the scanning, which took me almost 3 hours for 50 frames, out of a roll of nominally 24 full frame exposures.

My Pen D3 has a neat round mark in the lens, which allowed me to get it some years ago at a very reasonable price. Fortunately the blemish does not show too much in the pictures.

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful pictures, Julio.

I own a couple of dozen half-frame cameras and love them all.  (Well, most of 'em.)  But the Pen D3 is the most amazing of them all for its lens quality and small size.  These pictures are a testament to its high quality.

I just love boat pictures, Julio.  You should be able to get some good combinations from these.

Julio,

Thanks for another great series of boats. The half frame hold up wonderfully well with your Epson V600, albeit with some extra effort. You have showered us with so many excellent photos of fishing boats on NFF through the years. Please keep ‘em coming.

I've hardly used half-frame over the past 70 years, but my first 35mm camera was one: the Univex Mercury that I got at age 13. I always had a hankering to get a Pen F kit. especially after reading W.Eugene Smith used it a lot with such great success.

Thanks for the kind comments! Shooting the D3 is nice. I read somewhere that old Maitani wanted the D series to feel like Leicas. He got close.

The water around the boats was very dirty this year. It seems they had brought a lot of fish. They were cleaning the fish and throwing the refuse to the sea, right next to the boats. Fortunately smell cannot be photographed yet.

Next time I have to shoot this little beauty with B&W, probably some TMX if I can domesticate it with Beutler.

Wonderful images, Julio. I have a couple of half frame cameras. The lenses are so sharp.

I had to load my 1/2 frame up because of this and with frozen gold. :-)

These are fine photos from the D3; I especially liked the one that you posted in larger format and the full length view that immediately follows it. Both show off the vertical orientation of the "natural" half frame and the large depth of field.  I don't think I can help with an opinion about a diptych.  I read about such sometimes when I google "half frame", but I guess my eyes still need to learn to see what would make a good one-- even though I've taken lots of hf pictures.  I hope that you do make one from this series and post it.

Thanks Raid, Olypen and Larry! I must shoot this little camera more often, now that I can get HF negatives into my workflow.

FYI, Precision Camera offers very nicely done scanning at $12 for 25MB scans and developing, and this also applies to rolls from half frame cameras.
