Something to look forward to :p
It's summer holiday time, so before the not-so-wee-man went back to school, we headed over the ditch to the top of the South Island, round Motueka, Golden Bay and then over ranges to the eastern side for a couple more days before getting back on the ferry and heading across the straits back to Wellington.
The north western part of the South Island has some beautiful spots, both inland and on the coast, including Abel Tasman National Park - famous for its coast, its walks, and wasps (these introduced pests like the sweet sap from the native beech trees).
Here's some panoramas of the beaches in the middle of the summer school holidays. Packed, I tell you
High tide, Little Kaiteriteri

Little Kaiteriteri (left) and Kaiteriteri (right):

Low tide, Pakawau, near Farewell Spit:

No sharks, no stinging jellyfish, and pleasantly warm water....
Marina, Havelock (Marlborough Sounds). The cicadas are so loud on the bush walks in the hills that you actually have to cover your ears at times:
