Software to make digital "proof sheet"?

Does anyone know of a handy program that will layout a directory of images onto a single A4 sheet? Mac is preferred but Windows is OK too. I guess it would generate another image, or perhaps a PDF file...?

The software that came with my printer will do it but it doesn't make good use of the sheet. I was thinking a 4x9 layout would work well.

PSCS2  does a good job making contact/proof sheets. You can choose how you want them layed out (choose the numbers of rows/columns) and can have it print out the file name under each pic for reference if you want.

This is what use - works for me!
I develop my b/w film, then scan. I print out a sheet with my dev notes, and a contact sheet from PS. the Contact sheet and notes go back to back in a sheet protector next to the negs on my album.

Photoshop Elements 2.0 also does it, and sounds like the same way as CS2. A lot cheaper too

My Canon i860 came with "Photorecord", which also lets you configure contact sheets, but outputs straight to the printer.

Hi, thanks for the responses. I downloaded Lightroom but I don't have enough memory I may be getting Photoshop as I am told I can get it in a bundle with Acrobat, which I need for a completely different reason... I can get "academic" pricing so while it hurts it only hurts so much :shock:

That's one of the many jobs I use IrfanView for. At the price it's an amazing little program, which it would still be if it actualy cost anything at all!

Ole, I've used IrfanView for two or three years. I like it too but I've never seen a way to make multiple-image pages like this.  Can you explain?

No? You mean you haven't discovered the "Thumbnails" menus yet? That's how I make my web galleries, among other things...
