I paid a couple of bucks for this at the used store, a while back. It's been toilet-reading mostly, which means I gloss over things and think, "man, that stuff looks old-school...." before flushing.

Well, I've actually begun to dig into this book, and it is a real treasure trove of technical info, DIY tactics, etc. Very straight-forward, tons of images and illustrations.

Mine is a hardcover first ed. (8th printing) and it is still available (now 3rded.) through booksellers. I've no way of knowing how much of the old info has been replaced with new technology, but would hope that the meat of the 1st edition was kept.

If you would like a solid start-to-finish education in photography/lighting/darkroom, etc., this seems to be a good one to have.

Yup, I had one... $1 at yardsale
Gave it to the kid next door together with a Minolta SRT200 and a Rokkor-X 50/2 (thanks craig)

It is an excellent read, together with the UPton photography book.

This is the book that got me into photography. Even with the crazy layout of the book it has become a staple for information. Pages are dog eared and highlighted and overall well used. My parents bought the book for me for 15 birthday and I'm on my second copy. Plus it has Debbie Travis of the "Painted House" fame in it. Now I don't know what has made me in the collecting mad man the past few years but I will blame the book!

Don't have that one, but have a newer of his books "John Hedgecoe's New Book of Photography" 1994. A pretty good book that has numerous topics with shooting suggestions for each along with some great picture examples.

Hmm. Okay, I bit. I got my copy and see there IS a face there that looks like her.  Over and over again. Like p. 40 (in the 2nd ed.).   Is it her?

I've got that book.  In fact, that book convinced me to dump my digicam and buy a "real" camera.  Good stuff.

No idea who Debbie Travis is, but I do have Hedgecoe's book on landscape photography. I bought it retail in a bookstore, that's how much I wanted it.  I read it through once, and thought it was okay. Then a year or so later I read most of it again and liked it more than the first time. I think it works.  In a statistically-obsessed world I'm glad to inform you that my landscape photography has improved 23.5% since I got the book.

See?

If we're talking about the same one (Pentax LX in the cover?), it's also the book which got me involved in photography after quite some years' hiatus.

I found it on the uni's library (computer science), and literally that book spent months on my backpack, since I renewed the loan again, and again and again and again... Smiley

It was a superb train reading on the long way home. Several years later I found the re-edited version and got it as a b'day's present for a friend. The book was the same, yet the images were poorly printed when compared to the old one.

It's still one of my most loved books, not only for the contents, but also for how well that book made me feel, lol !
