I can see an easy variation of this that would give a conventionally mounted flash with bounce head the "broad reflector" look of the old big-bowl thermonuclear bulb flashes.  Nothing will get you back up to GN 200 on ISO 100, of course, but modern film is lots faster than what Weegee had to work with, too.

Basically, combine the Finnbounce with the ring flash bowl -- set the flash head vertical, use an aluminized bounce plate reflecting the flash into the bowl, and then the bowl will deliver the bulk of the light forward again, over a wide angle, but from an apparent source the size of the bowl.  This could easily mimic the look of the old 8" bowl reflectors, for a buck (for a thrift store plastic bowl) and some duct tape.

Gotta go make one of those (though it'll look even sillier than the bounce card mounted on my Canonet 28)...
