Stumbled over references to the not-so-common Epson 3200 flatbed. Looks pretty attractive. Very few on da 'Bay, but am watching them ...

Have any of you used this model?

Would it be a good idea or are there known defects?

Do you happen to know its immediate successor?

Thanks.

The 3200 was very well regarded.  It has both USB and Firewire connections and can scan up to 4x5.  Shortly after that the 4870 came out.  I think the upgrades were including Digital ICE and upped the resolution from 3200 to 4800.  It also scanned up to 4x5.

Anyway I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.

Yup, I have one and I believe Elek has one, too. These days, I'm only scanning images for web-display but it's quite capable of scanning nice, high-resolution images for printing although it does a much better job with MF or large-format negatives. But, that's probably true for all flatbed scanners.

With those eB*ay auctions, make sure the scanner comes with the film holders -- 35mm; 6x9 (I think it is; maybe 6x8); and 4x5. It really helps with avoiding Newton Rings.

EDIT
I should add that the 3200 ain't the fastest thing in the world when scanning high-rez images. It takes a couple of minutes to scan one 6x7 negative at 1200ppi.

3200 is what I use.  Look at any of my medium or large format postings.  I use a Nikon film scanner for 35mm.

The 3200 transparency stage can do only a tad over 4" wide, but handles the length of the bed, about 12". Got any panoramic negatives? ;-)

Bought mine in 2003 - still using it.  Took a file to the 6x7 holder so it can take 6x9.  Excellent for 4x5.  Just about acceptable for 35mm if it's for the web.

I can't seem to find that. Pricerite.com gives an error message.
