Couldn't get hold of any black Correx (as it's called over here) so I resolved to grid my snoots with drinking straws.  What a pain!

   

I'm not doing that again.  But I took one of the snoots out yesterday on a shoot to some local waterfalls.  It came in handy for one shot in deep shade ...

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, a snoot is intended to mask the flash to throw a spot smaller than the frame, and a grid narrows the flash's spot even further?

Yes, the snoot, depending on its length, keeps the light focused as a beam, Don.  However, on its own it gives a very sharp edge - the grid then stops the light from spreading outwards, effectively softening the edge effect.
