1  Gearheads / the Classics / Re: Kiev IV AM on: May 16, 2013, 11:29:00 AM
Larry -- If it has a meter, it must be a 4M rather than AM.  I have one with Helios 103, and Jupiter 12 lenses, and it is a solid performer.  My meter worked last time I checked, but that was some time ago.    --- James

A very Happy Birthday to you, Les.  I hope you both are well.  I'll be up north in late May and early June.  Let's try to get together. --- James

Color me green with envy, Dan.  Enjoying your words and pics.  The smaller size is probably better for the average computer monitor.  I guess Reed's suggestion was useful.  The x100s seems to be treating you well.

This crop is very impressive.  You've got a hell of a sensor there.  --- James

Pete -- Nice creative approach!

I now have the X100s.  I'll post a bit about it in Digital Dharma v. soon - it's good.  But, y'know, I see the IIIf with it's 1948 Summitar on the desk and the M4 with the Summaron 35/2.8 - and I have this overpowering urge to take one or other of them too.  It doesn't seem right to go all electronic on a pilgrimage

Dan -- On a hike like that you may wish for something much wider than the lens on the X100s.  By any chance do you have a Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim?  That would fit in a shirt pocket and maybe satisfy your urge not to be all electronic.  Just a thought.  --- James

Dan -- The x100s colors are fantastic.  It isn't yet available in the US, which is probably a good thing for my pocketbook.  Did you consider the Olympus EM-5 OM-D when you were shopping around?   I am very fond of mine.  --- James

Not bad at all, Paul!  If you want to "upgrade," try the Olympus 15mm f/8 body-cap lens.  I paid about $50 for mine.  It has glass.

That was some sniper attack in the last few seconds, Pete!  I suspect you are pleased.  --- James
10  Gearheads / SLRs | Rangefinders | Lenses & other for both / Re: Just before the Melt on: March 14, 2013, 03:09:24 PM
Bill -- These are seriously sharp, and the tonal range is remarkable.  I like them all.  Number 2 is particularly 'inviting.'  Snow Covered Pines is stunning.  Zuiko strikes again!  -- James
11  Gearheads / SLRs | Rangefinders | Lenses & other for both / Re: Olympus 35RC Check-out on: March 06, 2013, 11:11:39 AM
Phil -- You got some very nice vibrant colors here, for a cloudy day.  That 'junkyard' is a photographic treasure trove!  The 35RC is pleasing to use (I have two).  Nice work.  --- James

I am very impressed, Phil.  Yes, the antique place looks well worth a return visit.  That seems to be a helluva sharp lens.  Your local photo lab seems very capable (C-41, E-6, B/W).  Do you know if they do mail-order?  I didn't see any indication of this on their website.  --- James

Very, very nice Paul.  "View from the top" is especially nice.  I am amazed that you continue to get such well composed shots without benefit of a real (eye-level) viewfinder.  Even under not so bright conditions, I can't make things out on an LCD.  Maybe I should try a dark cloth Smiley.  --- James
14  General / The Eyes Have It | W/NW / Chinese New Year, Anyone? on: February 10, 2013, 06:38:11 PM
Reed George and I, and Reed's daughter Christine, took in part of the Chinese New Year celebration in Washington today.  Have there been any such celebrations in your neighborhood?

Yes.  This is much more what I was thinking.  I think a single person, looking into the shot (away from the camera) would be best.

Want to pose for me? Smiley Smiley  The more I look at it, the more I think that this last shot is my best of the day.
