3751  Gearheads / the Classics / Contax IIIa restoration and presentation on: August 21, 2005, 07:48:04 PM
The camera is absolutly stunning, Nicolas.  A job very well done!
The proof of the pudding is in the tasting, they say, and it looks like it's been well proved.  Great lineup of photos you have there.
3752  Gearheads / the Classics / The Barn, The 4A, some FP4, and time on my hands... on: August 19, 2005, 09:08:46 PM
So I'm out and about with my "new" Kiev 4A, heading home from the county fair.  I'm having fun, and I'm getting a blister on my right forefinger from winding this '60ish Contax copy.  I've been meaning to shoot up this barn for some time, and it just so happens that I don't have to be anywhere at the moment.  Burned all my TX at the fair, except for the last frame, and all that's left is a roll of good old Ilford FP4.  It's all over in half an hour.  Here goes...

"The Barn" is on Two Mile Rd.  Two miles from what, I don't know.

The Barn.  It's big and beautiful.  All I could ask for.  Well, almost.

Looking for something...

Windows, and 'lektricity, too.

Somebody put a phone in a barn?

They leave the door unlocked.  Hope sombody doesn't steal the phone.

A place for washing up, or watering the steed.

A nice mild day, (but no snow yet, Craig).

Home made scoop for...scooping stuff.

One more shot of "The Barn".  My last TX frame before I started in on the FP4.

Russian camera, Brit film, Yank barn, good day.

Once again, proof that it's not the photographer, but the camera in front of him. .

Nice stuff Gene.  I always enjoy your take on your home land.

Cool shots.  Very roundish camera. Tongue

I don't know anything about the toxins in the seed oils.  The part about being planted at different times, and keeping the sub-species seperate is from hanging around with a few farmers around here.
I think the bio diesel oils are something this country should be producing like there's no tomorrow, 'cause there's not!   We certainly have the land to grow it, and it's high time we got the yoke from around our neck.

Thank you Les!
There are certain times of year in ID that offer off season travelers very good deals on lodging and activity rates.  It's definitly a travel state in the warm months, and prices for some things go up during those times.  The seasons can change rapidly, though, and what was $75 one week, may be $30 the next.
The field is indeed rape seed.  It's actually a form of canola, and the oils from each are similar, but rapeseed oil is not edible.  Used as a fine machine oil.  You can't tell the difference between rapeseed and canola by sight, (well, maybe the farmer can), and the two are so closely related that they are not planted near each other, or even at the same time of year, to avoid cross-pollinaton.
The main crop here in the north is wheat and timber, with canola/rape, and peas taking a distant back seat.  Even so, there are many hundreds of acres of this yellow stuff out on the prairie.
3757  General / The F Stops Here / So, we're almost to 100 members! on: August 18, 2005, 11:26:48 AM
Give yourself a pat on the back, Craig!  You did the work here, after all.  You obviously put some thought into what would appeal to us, as a group.  It's working!
The 100 member point seems like a landmark today.  I'll wager it's a drop in the bucket, though, and that soon you will look back on it to realize how far things have come.

Good job, Craig.

Sure do like your shot here, Les.  Nice how the paved ways lead into and out of the photo.
No telling why the bike has been left.  Maybe from an old riding buddy.  Could belong to someone visiting the cemetery, too.
An acquaintance of mine, who was a fair hand with film and camera, passed away a few years ago at 36 years of age.  There are photographs left by his marker, on occasion.  Perhaps the bike is similar, in rememberance of a lost cyclist.

I'm not familiar with Tritone, though I'd be happy to be educated.  In any case, I think you have the period look with the tree shot, Mike.  It's beautiful in both versions, but I get the 1890's feeling from the shot featured in this post.
White may be the way to go for a mat, but you may have a look at a light slate color, too.  I don't know what the neg will stand, but I think an 11x14 print size would do well, although the size on my screen looks very good too.

I'm of mixed feelings about the bridge shot.  I actually like the original better, even if the shadows do go a bit dark.  Makes me think of coal and steam.  I'd put the original in a black mat, but I may be in the minority.
I think it needs to be straightned out a little first, though.  I get a leaning feeling.

Mike K:
I noticed the slight wobble in the aperture ring that you mentioned, but it doesn't present any problems.  This is my first Kiev, so I don't know if it's normal either.
I filed the short end of the spool, that faces the top of the camera.  The film was slightly low on the sprockets, and in just the slightest bind the way I saw it.  Filing the end of the spool puts the film in a centered position over the film gate, and lets the spool seat farther up into the camera body, so the spring plate that guides it doesn't rub on the top end of the light baffle at the end of the spool.
Everything works well on this camera, Mike.  Good job.

I found a seller in the US on ebay that had an 85mm Jupiter for the C/K mount.  It should be here in a couple of days.  $23.  Hoping I got lucky Smiley

What a neat shot.  Sometimes, a line down the middle will split the shot, kind of like a wedge between two halves.  This one has the opposite effect, and ties all the angles together.  Good going, Paul.
3762  Gearheads / the Classics / Fig leaf, Renaissance style on: August 16, 2005, 09:37:48 AM
Well worth the wait, Les!  I went through the thread from top to bottom, and when I finally got to "Fig Leaf" I chuckled out loud.  Very good.  Thanks!

I got one for the Kiev 4a I recently bought from Craig.  The Heavy2star guy was the first one I came across, so I went ahead and picked it up.  It's quite nice, and I think well worth the $14.  It was late, and I didn't pay for it until the next day.  He had already shipped it before I paid!
If you can find the same brand for less $ it's a heck of a deal.

Thank you all for commenting on this shot.

Tom, I talked to Barbara about using this shot here.  She liked the shot, and happily gave me the go ahead.  It was taken a few months ago for a web photo contest that never seemed to get off the ground.

I can see why you like your Kiev, J.  It's working well for you.  Nice stuff.
