Memorial Day remembrance for servicemen lost in all wars, all countries.

Nearest one to my house is a Civil War memorial in front of the former Framingham library, which was built in the same era as the statue.

After the Civil War came the Indian Wars, with much of the work being done by Black cavalrymen known as Buffalo Soldiers.  This is a memorial to them at Fort Selden in south-central New Mexico.  A lot of them died fighting the Apache so that displaced farmers from the Confederacy could prosper in the Rio Grande Valley.
