is is pronounced rĕt'nə, as in your eye

or, like I hear most people speak it, rĕ'tēnə like, well, rĕ-Tina Yothers

Tina doesn't make sense to me. I've heard people tell me its German it just seems weird that it's a camera, like an eye, spelled just like something in your eye, but, oh...we'll pronounce it different.

if you can solve this than we can start to talk about the difference between beemer (motorcycle) and bimmer (car) and how to pronounce each (each, apparently coming from Germany as well).

I don't know how it's officially pronounced.  I've always said it the Tina way.  It may not matter at all how the Germans said it.  If Kodak marketed it a certain way, that is how it's said.

I have only ever thought of pronouncing it like the retina in your eye, but I rarely talk to people in the real word about cameras so have probably never spoken it aloud nor heard it spoken... now that you mention it Re-tina does have a nice ring to it.

Over here BMW bikes or cars are always "Beemer" or "bee em double you". "Bimmer" almost sounds like a Cockney thing to me. I guess in Cherman they are "bay em vay".

It never occurred to me that it would be pronounced as anything but retina (like the part of an eye) until I was in a photo store and the woman behind the counter said "reh-TEENA."
