Opium and cocaine were in widespread use in the early 20th century.

So very true. Sherlock Holmes' stories are full of that stuff. And opium was already widespread way before that. For those interested, I strongly recommend reading "Confessions of an English Opium Eater", by Thomas de Quincey.  BTW, the Beatles' song "Happiness is a warm gun" comes from one chapter of that book, I think.

I've seen Parke-Davis 1920's ads for morphine, featuring hypodermic syringes in jewel boxes. How the world has changed.

Larry, Edgar Allan Poe was my favourite author when I was young.  Seems I had a taste for the macabre as a child.  My favourite story is still A Cask of Amontillado.  I don't know how old you are, but have you ever heard The Alan Parsons Project's album Tales of Mystery and Imagination?  If not, I suggest you get it.

The ironic thing is that caffeine was largely outlawed while cocaine was in rampant use.  If I could just find Coca-Cola like they had in the old days...

Nancy, Amontillado is an amazing story. Chilling, and it makes me scared to drink wine!

Well, let's see -- Larry's a year or so older than I am, and Nancy's the same age as my younger brother (whose first daughter is now in college).  I guess that makes me the same age as dirt??  Wink
