491 sales and 100% positive. I think buyer beware is implied nearly anywhere. The camera is obviously not pristine, and the seller is pretty clear about that. What makes you worry any more than the average resale on eby?

It's just this statement:""I am not a Leica expert, I am sell a few cameras for a dear friend who recently passed away."

It's typical of a seller hiding something. I know. I've been on the receiving end.

Of course, I could be wrong.

While I understand what you're saying Mabon (been there done that, too) OTOH, sometimes a certain level of risk is worth trying. If I had the spare coin, I'd give $500 a whirl and send it for CLA. No more than that, mind you, but under $500, yeah, the risk is moderated by what you can get from even a fairly trashed camera parting it out.

there is no way in hell that will end at it's sub $400 price right now.  If it does, I'm selling a crapload of stuff and sitting on ebay for that kind of deal.

Reputation notwithstanding, I think it is very wise to factor the price of a CLA in almost any Leica body purchase.

Definitely - a CLA is key. Start at $150 and use your best judgement.

Kirk - if I was a gambling man, I'd bet $499 on it right now and see what happened. If you split the two, gave them a spit-shine and resold them separately, you should get at least that.

Sold for $542. Not bad. Doesn't mean it was gettable for $545 though as the winning bidder's max bid may have been higher.

With the Summicron, that's a great price -- even factoring in another $250 for a CLA.

Thanks for the advice.  Some of them were very excellent advice.

Sounds like I possibly can get a classic LTM because they're cheaper.

I like the screwmounts, myself. Slower to load, but smaller, lighter and more ... well, classic.

and cheaper.

Classic IIIa

or Classic IIIf, take your pick

(the IIIc is nice too)

The M3 and M2 are the oldest, of course, and maybe the most plentiful of all the models (certainly the M3 is).  So you ought to be able to get a good deal on either.  If you want the 35mm frameline for sure, that lets the M3 out, but in my opinion it's just a lovely camera.  It has the most precise viewfinder of all of them because of its high magnification, and the viewfinder/rangefinder design of the M3 is the most complicated and least likely to flare.

Many people regard the 35/50/90 viewfinder of the M2 as the ultimate in simplicity and utility -- hard to argue with that.  And if you get one of the earlier M2s without the self-timer, there's a very nice simpliciity to that as well.

Work on developing a smug attitude. That's step #1.

I gave into that "gotta have it a few years back" and got 2 Leica M3's, 35mm suumicron, 50 Summicron and a 90 Elmar, paid $500.00 for the whole set up.  Surprised to find out, except for the obvious "look what I got" smug attitude, I really didn't clic with Leica.  It's a great performance machine for equipment lovers, but I don't think it was that "great a glass".  For my needs I like the Rollei's for MF, Yashica electro's for RF and the Nikon or Pentax glass as well for SLR's.

Ha, ha; absolutely the same here! The only cameras and lenses that have ever dissilusioned me have been those of Leitz. Maybe my hopes were set too high. But I don't think so. When my Leica stuff didn't outperform (many times didn't even match) much more mundane (but extremely good) equipment, I was flabbergasted. A victim of reputation!
And the people asking "Is that a Leica? Ohh! Ahhh!"...
I hated the whole experience. You won't find me dead with one of those never more.

Zeiss glass forever!

I like the screw mounts better than the M series.

I had an M6, but it wasn't for me, so I sold it. I also had another M body (M2, maybe), but it needed work, so I sold that too.

I thought the Summicron was an excellent lens, and I like what I get from the Summitar.
