I just aquired another XA-2 yesterday, it had a single 3v {dead}battery in it. I didn't know that these were still available.  I had to go to Radio Shack for something and I'll be darned, they sell  the proper one for the camera. Sort of exspensive. About double of the 1.55 s that I have always used in these cameras.  I did buy one.
So-- does the camera still work OK with 2  1.55 stacked batteries or will it do better with the single 3v ?

My (late) XA2 worked with two button batteries. Best camera ever for pocket service.

The manuals for all of the XA series (XA,  XA2, XA3, XA4) all say two button batteries.  That's all I have ever used, and I have a number of the cameras.  The two batteries work fine, are easily available and are cheap.  I buy them in groups of 10 or so on eBay since I have a number of cameras which use them.  Great cameras.

With tax and all I paid almost $11.00 for the single battery.
At a Winco food store I bought a pack of 3 357 button batteries for under $4.00
It is too bad that I opened the single, I would have taken it back to Radio Shack.
The only reason that I bought the single is because the fresh from Value Village XA-2 had one in it.
I have had a few of these the last couple of years { sold them here on site} and never seen a single battery application before. BTW- I have 2 of them now, both with the A-11 flash.
