My 4990 scanner has fairly heavy internal fog due to out-gassing (Epson, I be hating on you). Anyone take theirs apart to clean it? Easy?

The quality of the scans is being affected. At first I thought my processing was to blame. Nope.

Oy!

Diff'ernt beast altogether (and yet I post), but I recently disassembled my Agfa Duoscan for the same purpose.  The top came off with a minimum of screws, and the mirrors (mostly) were cleaned in place using a purpose-bought microfiber "mirror polishing" cloth from Home dePot.  Didn't make a substantial difference, but upon review of before and after scans, there's a noticeable change toward goodness.   FWIW, YMMV, LMAO.

I just found out my Ebson 4050 has the same problem. Scanning prints it doesn't show, but I tried doing negs and they look to have water marks? I thought maybe they didn't wash them well enough. But looking deeper I think it is my scanner.

There's some discussion here and suggests it's documented online somewhere(s)...

There should also be a thread in the archives here.

My Epson does it from time to time, usually tracing the pattern of the neg holder if I leave it in there.  Always clears itself.

I had the same problem with my 2450.  Somewhere on the net are instructions for taking it apart.  I put off doing it for a couple of years because it sounded difficult.  Finally followed the instructions a couple of months ago and it took me 15-20 minutes to take it apart, clean the glass and put it back together.  I've got the page mark on one of my home computers but not here at work.  I have a feeling the different Epsons are all basically put together the same.  Google the 2450 and see what you can find.

Thanks guys. On a day when I feel patient and ballsy, I will take the f*cker apart! Oddly, it seems to have cleared a bit now. WTF?

Now I realize that for years I thought my film drying was to blame, but it really was the scanner.

Major,
Before starting surgery you might want to look into the Yahoo Group: Epson_Scanners.  Outgassing and fogged glass is a common problem - my 4180 is so affected.  Anyway, there are good instructions there (go the the FILES section) on taking the things apart.

Here are a couple of links:

Here is the main address:

All right then! I may have to have a few belts first- just to steady my hand. Wink
