Waiting for the light

I'm back on NFf after getting locked out for about 24 hours.  Man, that was rough.  I thought it was bad when RFf went down for a week, but this was worse.  Over there it's more like a crowd, wheras here it's more a friendly gathering.

Anyway, what happened was I went to log on the evening of the 15th, and couldn't.  I got some error message saying my log-on failed, and I should check my cookie settings.  So I tried to log on again, and it said my password was incorrect.  I know I put it in correctly, so I tried again, and got the first error message again.  Tried again after 15 minutes, ans still no luck.  So I tried some different settings in my browser, and that didn't cure things.  So I shut the computer down, and went to bed.

Got up the next day, and after my usual morning routine, I tried to log on to NFf.  Still no joy.  I checked with three other members to see if they were having problems, and I was the only one, so it couldn't have been a systemwide failure.  I contacted our fearless leader, but didn't get a reply.  I know he's busy, and I told him it wasn't a priority kind of thing, so I figured I might hear from him in a day or two.  But this evening I gave it another go, and woo-hoo, I got logged in!

Here's my theory on what happened.  There was a hick-up in the system when I tried to log-in on the 15th, and it locked me out for 24 hours.  At least that's what I think it was.  I hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.  And Craig could use someone else as a contact person in case problems with the forum arise.  I'm no whiz with the computer, I just use one.  I went from Windows 3.1 to XP Pro in one full leap, but it was more of a welcome relief, not having to type in a bunch of commands anymore.  So I won't be volunteering for the post of Assistant Administrator.  However, there needs to be someone who can take over in case something else should happen to Craig.

I'm glad you got it cleared up and you're back.   I agree with you that if there is someone with both the technical confidence and the time, they could offer themselves as Craig's lieutenant to watch for problems, and clear them up.  I'm like you -- I have neither time nor technical ability, so (sez someone else) it's easy for me to say.  But NelsonFoto is a fine place and I hope we can iron out wrinkles without putting any more strain on Craig's time and life than he already has.

I've got sketchy access to Internet from "home" and am working 60 hours a week, over night shifts. I'm a bit lop-sided. I regret that I missed your messages until now. Glad you got it sorted out.

Happy New Year, Craig!  You shouldn't work so hard.  I think the system just staightened itself out, and I've heard of this happening to others on different systems.  We'll chat about it some other time.
