I have the Sigma 70-200/2.8 (two versions ago, no OS) and use it for shooting sports, primarily ones where I'm shooting from the sideline, not so much from up in the stands. I'm very happy with it, it's long enough for most things I want to get, at least on the soccer or ultimate frisbee field. Haven't had much occasion to shoot baseball/softball, but I think it would work pretty well for that, too. It's not quite as good as the Nikon 70-200/2.8, I think, but it's certainly much cheaper I can provide examples if that's helpful.
I also have the Sigma 70-300/4-5.6 (APO version, no HSM), which I used before I got the 70-200. It's actually a decent lens, just slow. Has some macro capability, but restricted to the 200-300 end of the range. It's very difficult to handhold still at 300 on my 1.7x crop factor DSLR, but it's also light and compact and they'll let me bring it into Gillette Stadium when I attend games there without question, whereas they won't allow lenses 'over 6" long' (which seems primarily to be up to the judgement of the security people at the gate). It's very inexpensive -- but be sure you get the APO version, which is noticeably better than the non-APO version.
