While Hagar is distracted visiting his ancient homeland, I have finally decided to share his last pictures from Frankfurt, Germany, with you. Again Hagar was out for street photography and I hope you don't mind me posting some shots from his gayer side. Tech details: All pictures were taken with the "Hagar" Agfa/Ansco Viking 6x9 camera that is equipped with an Agfa Agnar 105mm f/4.5 triplet. I shot these pictures on Ilford Delta 400 which was processed by my local B/W pro lab. For most of my shots I used my recently-acquired Nikon SB-30 speedlight for some fill flash. I incident metered the light with my trusty Sekonic L-508. The pictures were scanned with my poor flatbed scanner. They are not cropped and not digitally manipulated. More of Hagar's pictures from Frankfurt can be seen here. Saturday, 29th July 2006(Christopher-Street-Day Parade) f/11-16, 1/200, 8ft, flash@f/11 -1/2 #1: A group of motorcycle riders at the head of the parade. f/16, 1/200, 8ft, flash@f/11 #2: STD-awareness nurses. f/16-22, 1/200, 8ft, no flash #3: Gay cheerleaders performing. f/16, 1/200, 6ft, flash@f/11 #4: No comment. f/16, 1/200, 8ft, flash@f/11 #5: The mandatory hunks. f/16, 1/200, 6ft, flash@f/11 #6: Dancing girl on float. f/16, 1/200, 3ft, flash@f/11 #7: This is not a real German police officer! Tuesday, 1st Ausgust 2006(From 38th floor of a university building) f/11, 1/200, infinity, no flash #8: Frankfurt panorama.

Hagar has now left both his homeland and his real homeland, and is ready to meet the spring in Australia.
I'll have to get around to developing some films one of these days - no wait! I've got one! I shot a colour film as well, and that's been developed. If I get home from the rig next week, I'll get some of the pictures scanned. And the rest of the stuff developed, printed and scanned...

That's some party, Bueh. I guess you had to wipe perspiration off the lens from time to time.

Nice fill flash work. That's something I've never done.

Nice, big, 6x9 negatives of the gaiety Good use of the fill flash. I was just in Frankfurt a few weeks ago - long enough to change trains, that's it! I never have managed to see the city though like most travellers have spent a lifetime in that airport!

Nothing to gripe about there. Probably should have put a NSFW (Not safe for work) tag in the subject line, as many might be checking this thread from their corporate-masters dungeo... I mean, corporate networks.
I am not opposed to nudity, I think you did a really bang up job here with this set, but want to make sure those who might be offended or simply might not want to offend any at work should have the heads-up before entering the thread.
Rock on, Hagar!
C.

Hey, it's good to see Hagar has a gay side too! I probably would have been too distracted to make even those shots... But nice work!

Wow those turned out well. I really need to work on fill flash techniques. Looks like you have a talent for estimating focus distance too! Incidently, send the "hunk" on the far left to my part of the world.

Looks like a fun time was had by all Beuh, and great work with the fill flash. I forgot to comment on your World Cup pictures which I also enjoyed a great deal - they gave a real sense of the atmosphere over there at the time.
It's now my turn to show Hagar a good time, but I don't think he'll have quite as much fun as in Germany...

Wow those turned out well. I really need to work on fill flash techniques. Looks like you have a talent for estimating focus distance too! thats one of the first things i thought of looking at these, just like the other series of the soccer fans. how did you manage that? did you use that pre-setting thats marked on the lens, or just work with depth of field? looking at these, i feel like a real boob, having been only barely able to focus on inanimate buildings and the like. i have my binder of negatives here in vancouver, maybe i can persuade my friend to let me scan them and then post my un-printed images of earth day in victoria. it would kind of compliment this series...

C.E., I am really sorry I forgot about this NSFW thing. It never crossed my mind as a student/self-employed from librul Europe. I hope no-one got into trouble viewing these shots. I tried to edit my post but could not change the title. Thanks for adding the NSFW header. As you noticed, I am really hooked on fill flash. I regularly use with for most of my photography, especially when shooting events in bright sunlight. After I began working with flash techniques for taking pictures with my classic cameras in dance clubs (some of you might remember my shots with Andrea's Hal around the World camera) I started experimenting with fill flash. I love the look it produces with my (people) subjects, how it almost imperceptible sets them apart from the background (4, 5 and 7 are good examples for this), and of course how it brightens harsh shadows. Modern (i.e., aperture computer-equipped) flash units work beautifully with vintage leaf shutter cameras. Usually I incident meter the light and set the correct aperture/shutter speed on my camera. Then I set the flash on aperture computer (auto mode) one f-stop less ("wider open") than the camera -- sometimes more, sometimes less -- so that illumination by flash light only would result in underexposure. Limitations are the available aperture I can select on the flash unit and distance to subject. I love how this also is some kind of insurance against severe underexposure in case I make a mistake when measuring the light. I guestimated the focus for these pictures and relied on the large depth-of-field I had thanks to the fast film in bright daylight. Fortunately, this worked out much better than with my first two rolls which were shot with slow-speed film in the late afternoon. I am glad you like these pictures. Hagar had a lot of fun, too, and the people responded very friendly to his somewhat old-fashioned Viking nature. I could have shot tons of more pictures, but I think three rolls are enough as didn't want to spoil Hagar. He should also enjoy his upcoming locations!
